Healthcare

Virtual and augmented reality open a wide range of opportunities offering better healthcare services and improving patient care. These technologies make possible new ways of treatment, which are not achievable by traditional means.
VR and AR also refine the educational process allowing to acquire the necessary skills and experience before engaging with real patients.

In healthcare, especially in surgery, proper training is critical. Doctors and surgeons do not spend years in universities and internships for nothing. Practical training is a significant part of their education.

However, surgical practice is difficult to organize, as no medical school will allow inexperienced surgeons to operate on actual patients. Thus, students practice with models or cadavers and only at the advanced stages of their education are allowed to treat people.

Virtual reality and augmented reality can widen the learning opportunities for young surgeons. By setting up surgeries in VR, medical schools can provide more practical training without any risk to patients. Students operating in VR will learn at the muscle level practicing the correct moves and instrument handling.

What we do

AR solution for remote areas

Whether assistance is needed at a hospital, a remote nursing station, or on the road in an ambulance, the our off-the-shelf Supporteo’s platform remote expert assistance helps healthcare professionals speed up care and provide in-depth training.

Remote expert assistance is an AR capability that provides “see-what-I-see” visuals to teams working in different facilities.

Benefits:

  • Supervision and guidance of bedside procedures with remote specialists, reducing the number of staff members physically required;
  • Support for paramedics in transit via ambulance;
  • Collaboration with remote specialists to diagnose and discuss treatment plans for patients in nursing stations and care homes;
  • Train new and untrained/unqualified staff on procedures that need to be learned quickly.

VR surgical training

Virtual reality training solutions enable young surgeons to be trained in various procedures. Due to the virtual reality technology, a trainee is fully immersed in the scenario and practices taking right steps while dealing with time pressure and stress in the realistic environment.

Benefits:

  • Possibility to obtain hands-on experience before dealing with real people rather than learning through observation;
  • Chance to increase opportunities for assessing skills;
  • Ability to replicate various scenarios which are impossible to reproduce in real life;
  • Opportunity to train more frequently and accelerate the learning process;
  • Full immersion in the situation and the environment in the operating room taking into account physical constraints and moral pressure.

vr apps for pain management and recovery

VR Pain Management and Recovery applications

Virtual reality applications can be used in hospitals in order to alleviate pain and distract patients. VR headset can be offered during IV insertions, blood draws, breakthrough pain between scheduled doses of medication, insomnia, pain management of burn-injured patients, recovery from physical trauma. In virtual reality, patients can be replaced from the hospitals to the beautiful park or beach where they relax.

Benefits:

  • Possibility to propose alternatives to the painkillers and opioids;
  • Opportunity to fasten and improve patient recovery;
  • Ability to propose innovative solutions to patients, which don’t have side effects.

VR applications to overcome a phobia

Applications, which help to conquer fears and anxiety (fear of flying, public speaking, heights, etc.) confronting them in virtual reality.

Benefits:

  • Possibility to practice relaxing techniques before facing real fear and anxiety;
  • Opportunity to repeat sessions until a patient overcomes a fear;
  • Option to recreate and immerse the patient into situations, which are impossible to reproduce by traditional means;
  • Chance to be guided and supported by a psychologist.

There are already quite a number of VR applications aimed at bringing the medical practice to a higher level. Real surgeries recreated in virtual reality allow the students to be “present” in the operating room. Surgery simulators provide multiple scenarios that can be practiced as many times as needed to develop the skill.

Augmented reality is also used in medicine, particularly, for more precise surgery planning. By overlaying virtual images on the patient’s body, the doctors can get a more complete picture of the problem and achieve higher accuracy during the surgery.

Moreover, AR can be used even during the surgery itself adding the images obtained from CT to the patient’s body. Such virtual images provide additional visual aid to the surgeon ensuring a much higher surgery precision.

This task is in the core of the AR to achieve truly precise surgeries. The surgeon wearing AR glasses can literally see “inside” the patient to plan more accurate and less traumatic surgeries.
