Virtual Reality experience that creates an illusion of flying through the outer space

Context

What's the outer space like? How does it feel to fly through space in zero gravity? Virtual reality technology can't make you weightless, but it can definitely make virtual flight feel like a real one.

Space Elevator is another virtual reality project Jasoren developed for Artplay, a design center. Previously we engaged with the same client to build Mission Mars, a virtual reality experience that allows people to explore the red planet in the virtual settings.

The Space Elevator attraction is designed as an interactive experience for Solaris, a family exhibition about space. The purpose of the Space Elevator was to create a sense of flight with the help of a real moving platform combined with virtual views of the space.

Project overview

The Space Elevator project development included the following activities:

  • Writing the virtual reality scenario
  • Creating a real Elevator installation
  • Synchronizing VR content with the moving of the Elevator
  • Creating 3D virtual environment and virtual objects
  • Programming interactions with the virtual environment
  • Programming the system based on triggers and visual effects

Solution

It took Jasoren team three-months-and-a-half to develop the project. After the development process was complete, we performed user testing for about a month. This allowed us to improve the virtual reality experience based on the user feedback.

The team working on the project included: 3D Designer, 3D Animator, two Unity3D Developers, Hardware Specialist, Sound Engineer, Quality Assurance Specialist, and Project Manager.

Space Elevator attracted even more visitors than Mission Mars, our previous virtual reality project for the same exhibition.

Synchronizing VR content with the real world
In our virtual reality experience, we needed to give a user a sense of flying through space. For that, we used a real Elevator, a platform that could move up and down. The challenge was to synchronize the virtual view with the movement of the platform.

Highly detailed 3D environments
To create a fully immersive experience that feels like real we needed to achieve a high level of graphics quality. We used the Oculus Rift platform for development.

The project Space Elevator combines real environment and a completely virtual environment. As users fly through the space on the Elevator, they see virtual imagery around them.

More than 12,000 people had a chance to experience virtual flight at the exhibition. The project was a great success. After the season ended, Space Elevator moved from the Artplay design center to the largest Expocentre.
